Chroma Squad Review
Chroma Squad
Chroma Squad, published and developed by Behold Studios after a very successful Kick-Starter campaign is a turn based, tactical RPG inspired by Saban's Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.
The basic story is that five stunt actors filming a hit TV show decide to quit the show and start their own studio and film their own Mighty Morphin Power Rangers inspired TV show.
You begin by casting the actors, then as you progress through filming episodes and building up a fan base you can upgrade your studio, purchase or craft equipment for your actors and build and customise a giant Mech which is used for final battles.
Anyone who was a fan of the Power Rangers in the nineties will get a kick out of the nostalgia, I personally spent a lot of time as a kid pretending to be power rangers with my friends, and Chroma Squad brings back all those memories.
Memories of me jumping off roofs, doing totally sick flying kicks, smashing through walls and fighting giant monsters from outer space, while my friends would watch in awe as the mighty Green Ranger ( me) would beat up all the bad guys single handedly and then turn on his squad members ( my friends) and beat them up too all while screaming GO GO POWER RANGERS as loud as humanly possible. It was awesome. Everybody loved it.
Chroma Squad allows you to re-live all those great childhood moments as well as engaging in a great story line as you film episodes, upgrade your studio, craft gear and improve your squad and Mech with a wide range of equipment made of cardboard, plastic and a shit-load of tape.
One thing I found very cool was how the game constantly broke the 4th wall by introducing characters as Kick-starter Backers, the bad spelling of the narrator and constantly referring to itself as a game and TV show and cracking jokes about the original Power Rangers show. Chroma Squad doesn't take itself too seriously, but you can, because on higher difficulties it is actually pretty hard.
I played the game on the 'Interesting' difficulty, and most of the way through wasn't too hard, there were a few restarts but it never felt impossible, that is, until the final level. The difficulty seemed to ramp up significantly. So much so that after about 25 attempts at the final level I had to resort to dropping the difficulty in order to finish the game so I could write this review.
I had a great time playing Chroma Squad, my first play-through took a good 25 hours. There is a lot of replay value here also, I played with the default squad but there are over 20 different cast members to choose from and all their interactions with each-other is different. There are multiple endings also depending on your squad composition and the choices you make throughout the game. And upon completion of your first play-through there is a New Game+ also. So for the price of $15AUD you will get hours and hours of content and it is all very enjoyable, at no point did I get bored or feel like the game was wasting my time.
So we have nostalgia, entertaining story all the way through, crafting and upgrades, great pixel art, light RPG elements and challenging, Engaging tactical game-play. AND it's Power Rangers.
Chroma Squad 9/10.
I had to deduct a point for the difficulty spike on the last level if not for that it would have been a solid 10/10
